Sol was a chemical salesman and Evelyn was a hospital administrator who worked at Jamaica Hospital. Her family emigrated from Siberia and the Russian-Polish border and were Jewish.

Her brother is George Barkin who is a scriptwriter. He is also the former editor-in-chief of National Lampoon and High Times.

He was a co-producer of Letters to Juliet which starred Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Egan, Gael García Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero. Along with his sister, he set up a film production company called Applehead Pictures in late 2005.
